UniRank : un bon indice de la popularité des universités africaines mais pas de leur qualité

UniRank vient de publier son Top 200 des meilleures universités africaines en 2018. Ce palmarès n’est pas pour autant une preuve de la qualité de leurs formations.

Très peu d’universités d’Afrique francophone figurent dans l’édition 2018 du Top 200 des universités africaines d’UniRank. Les établissements sud-africains, comme l’université de Pretoria ou du Cap, trustent le haut du panier aux côtés des nigérians et des égyptiens. Première au palmarès francophone, l’université algérienne Kasdi Merbah de Ouargla se classe 37e. Plus généralement, l’Algérie est le pays francophone, le plus représenté, avec 24 établissements figurant au classement.

Popularité sur web

Le site australien, qui référence depuis 2005 près de 13 000 établissements d’enseignement supérieur agréés par leurs États respectifs, rencontre à chaque publication de palmarès, un écho médiatique important. Pourtant, UniRank ne juge pas la qualité des formations de ces établissements : ”Nous ne prétendons à aucun moment classer les établissements d’enseignement supérieur ou leur programmes selon la qualité ou le niveau académique des enseignements qu’ils dispensent”, souligne l’entreprise sur son site web.

En réalité, le service évalue la popularité des écoles et universités sur le web d’après des critères comme leur référencement sur les moteurs de recherche ou encore leur audience, et ce, avec l’aide de cinq entreprises spécialisées sur ces sujets.

Le classement est ainsi mis à jour tous les six mois. Dans la même logique, UniRank propose également des classements des établissements d’enseignement supérieur les plus populaires sur des réseaux sociaux comme Facebook ou Twitter.
